The Northern Ireland midfielder was an all action performer with his tremendous passing of the ball. He was at times an influential player who never gave up a lost cause

The Ulster man was strong in the tackle and good at holding the ball up, also efficient at dead ball situations.

Sammy was a creative force capable at free kicks scoring his only League goal for the Reds from a free kick on November 24 1997 when he bent an inch perfect free kick around the wall and into the bottom corner from the edge of the box

Clingan unfortunately though was a ticking time bomb, only a second away from being booked or sent off, even so the fans were sorry to see him leave at the end of the successful 2007-2008 campaign where he would have impressed in the Championship
