Clough believed it was the signing of Peter Shilton that was instrumental in achieving the success that Forest saw in the late seventies and eighties. Forest won 4 of their opening 5 matches of the 77-78 season where John Middleton was still in goal, when Shilton arrived Forest only conceded 6 more goals in the next 14 matches. In 37 league appearances Shilton only let in 18 goals keeping 23 clean sheets. A rock in both European Cup Finals.

Shilton was cup tied in the victorious League Cup run of 1978-1979 allowing the eighteen years old Chris Woods to deputise for him succesfully.

In the 1977-1978 season Shilton won the Professional Footballer Association player of the year award.

Shilton was the constant England goalkeeper for most of the seventies and eighties also.

When Shilton left for Southampton Hans Van Breukkelen was brought in to replace him
