Matt Gillies Matt joined the club in January 1969 replacing the much liked Johnny Carey. He had a lot to contend with upon joining as Tommy Graham retired after a 40 year association with the club and Bob Mckinley had retired on 15th November the previous year. In 1970 Gillies bad luck continued when the goalkeeper Alan Hill suffered a double fracture of his right arm in a game at the City Ground against Everton retiring him from the game. He was offered a job by Gillies on his coaching staff a job he kept for many years. In 1972 Gillies side were relegated to Division two and Matt resigned as manager paving the way for Dave Mackay. return to previous page |
