Signing fee: £150.000 from Birmingham City

Burns was originally a striker at Birmingham City where he had finished the previous season scoring 17 goals, when he arrived at Forest Clough immediately transferred him to Central defence alongside Larry Lloyd and one of the greatest defensive partnerships was formed.

Lloyd and Burns were like two roman gladiators who scared the life out of any would be strikers who dared to venture into their path come matchday. But it is testament to Burns' defensive skills that during the 1977-1978 Division one winning side he was booked only once all season. Clough and Taylor must take credit for that as they taught him to channel his temper and use it as a positive force in the game.

Though in the European Cup Final against Hamburg, Kevin Keegan knew he was in a game when Burns went into him with such ferocity that for the remainder of the game Keegan was silenced beyond recognition.

In the 1977-1978 season Burns was awarded the Sportswriters Footballer of the year and the Midlands sportswriters player of the year award.

Burns won the Division one Championship, two European Cups and a League Cup among others during his time at Forest.

After retiring Burns worked for Century Radio in Nottingham alongside his former team mate Garry Birtles where they held a nightly football phone in.
