Forest Managers

Johnny Carey

Johnny joined Forest as manager in 1963 after the previous manager Andy Beattie resigned.

Johnny was the manager in 1965 when Forest celebrated their centenary with a game at the City Ground aganist Valencia which ended a 1-1 draw. The New Main Stand was completed that same year and Carey took Forest on a tour of the USA and Canada.

In 1966 Carey brought Terry Hennessy and Joe Baker for record fees and instantly the Reds looked a dominant force. By the end of the 1966-1967 season Forest finished runners up in Division One to Manchester United and reached the FA Cup Semi Final losing 1-2 at Hillsborough to Spurs. The Reds also competed in the Inter City Fairs Cup for a second time and beat Eintrach Frankfurt before losing to FC Zurich.

In 1968 Carey had to contend with the destroyed Main Stand after catching fire in a game against Leeds United on August 24th, making the Reds play the next 6 home games over the river at Meadow Lane, where they didn't win a single match. They returned to the City Ground on November 16th where Arsenal were the visitors, though the main stand remained closed.

In January 1969 Carey was replaced by Matt Gillies.
