Mcgovern was the midfield work horse who would feed Robertson simple passes. John would be the first to admit that he wasn't the most technically gifted player in the Forest side and often he was never easy on the eye for the spectators but he had an ability to create masses of time for himself on the ball.

Now to be heard commentating on the Reds on BBC Radio Nottingham Mcgovern was brought from Derby County and the Forest fans often gave him a hard time due to his difficult style of play and his awkrard running, but his positional sense and the solid distribution, unselfish work rate and the stability he created for the talent around him cannot be ignored.

Mcgovern had played for Clough at Derby and Leeds during the 44 day hell stay so he was mightily relieved to be reunited with his ex boss when Clough snapped him up for the Reds.
