Perch was a constant player in the 2008-2009 season sometimes playing in midfield though predominantly a defender.

James played much of the game against Bristol Rovers in the 2007-2008 season with a broken hand

He found it hard to become a regular in more recent times under the leadership of Billy Davies, making the majority of his appearances from off the bench.

It was a surprise to many when Perch was signed by Newcastle United in July 2010 for his first taste of Premier League Football, especially for Billy Davies who claimed that Perch was sold by the acquisition committee without his knowledge.
