![]() Gary Megson Gary became a hated figure at the City Ground due to his attitudes and arrogance for the clubs history, he made enemies instantly by sacking Des Walker from the backroom staff and stating that there were too many has beens and hangers on at Nottingham Forest He was employed as the manager to clear up Joe Kinnear's mess as a fix it man, but he failed and Forest finished 23rd in the Championship becoming the only European Cup winning side to fall into the depths of League One for the first time in over fifty four years One game at the City Ground is memorable though when Megson decided it would be a good idea to invite a fan from the stands into the dressing room to give the half time team talk after he had abused Megsons tactics throughout the first half Clearly if the players had not lost all respect for Megson by that time they surely did after that particular episode It was in February 2006 when Forest lost 3-0 to Oldham Athletic that Megson left the club by mutual consent much to everyones relief leaving the job to make way for Colin Calderwood Gary did however win some brownie points back from the Forest fans a couple of years after he parted company with the club. Then he was manager of local rivals Leicester City and the Carling Cup had drawn Forest and City together in the third round. At the Walkers Stadium the City midfielder Clive Clarke collapsed due to a heart attack and Forest at that time were leading 0-1. It was decided at half time that the game should be abandoned as the Leicester players were affected by what they had seen happen to their teammate and the replay took place one week later at the City Ground As the players and staff came out of the tunnel there were loud boos for Megson but they were quickly silenced when it became apparent that Paul Smith the Forest goalkeeper was being allowed to walk the ball into the West Bridgford End goal to restore Forest's original lead after only 23 seconds of play. Forest did however lose 1-2 return to previous page |
