Frank Clark restored the Reds to the Premier League in his first season in charge as Forest finished runners up in the new Division One. This was an amazing feat after a poor start to the season but the Reds then went on to lose only three games from the last 32 games to gain that automatic promotion spot, nine points clear of third place.
By the end of the first month back in the Premiership Frank won the Premiership Manager of the month award. Forest were unbeaten for ten matches from August till November when Blackburn beat the Reds at the City Ground with a 2-0 victory, after Forest lost Collymore to injury a game before. Frank had to contend with Collymore's constant transfer shenanigans during that 94-95 season and persuaded him to see out the season with the Reds. Frank also broke the Forest transfer record by signing Bryan Roy from Foggio for £2.5 million. During that 1994-1995 season Forest had some great wins including a 4-1 drubbing of Spurs, Sheffield Wednesday got hammered 7-1 and a 2-1 victory over Manchester United showed that the Reds were no just promoted pushovers. Forest ended up finishing third in the Premier League after a 13 match unbeaten run at the end of the season and qualified for the UEFA Cup.
Frank finally saw Collymore leave the club for a British transfer record of £8.5 million pounds. He quickly signed Chris Bart Williams, Kevin Campbell, Andrea Silenzi and Alan Fettis. The new squad reached the sixth round of the FA Cup before losing to Aston Villa after a long run of games which saw many replays. In the Premier League Forest finished in 9th position, but in the UEFA Cup Clark's team reached the quarter finals further than any other British club before losing to Bayern Munich who went on to win the tournament.
In the 1996-1997 season things looked hopeful when Forest beat Coventry City 3-0 on the opening day, but then the Reds only achieved 5 more League victories all season and were relegated after finishing bottom of the Premier League. Clark tried to do the right thing in December and resigned but the effect of Stuart Pearce as caretaker manager wasn't enough to save Forest from the inevitable.
Franks legacy is still one of being the only manager since Brian Clough to achieve real success at the City Ground in the higher flight of English football, despite not winning any silverware, the third place finish in the Premiership is the highest league position Forest have held since 1995.
