Brought to the club as cover for injured defenders Calderwood brought experience and stability to the back four, but after only 6 appearances he dislocated his ankle and broke a fibula playing Birmingham in April of 2000, forcing him to retire after 20 years in football.

As a manager with Forest Colin took Forest back to the Championship in 2008 but after a troubled start to the season he left in 2009 where he was appointed a coach at Newcastle United
