Archie Gemmill NAT: Scotland POS: Midfield Previous Clubs: Derby County Joined Forest: 1977 Signing fee: £20.000 plus John Middleton to Derby County Left Forest: 1979 Archie was Forest's midfield anchor man who held everything together alongside John Mcgovern, allowing for the flair of Robbo on the left hand side and able to take pressure from both the defence and attack with ease Gemmill was instrumental in the 0-4 drubbing of Manchester United at Old Trafford during the 1977-1978 League title winning season. A defensive header from the edge of the United box was intercepted by Gemmill who broke rapidly causing United to become overstretched, he rode one tackle and carried the ball into the oppostition half, then flicked a cross field ball from the right to the left and directly to the feet of Robertson who casually took the ball around the keeper and into the open net to score Forest's third goal of the day. Archie was also immortalised in the movie Trainspotting in the scene where the character Renton has sex Gemmill's goal for Scotland against Holland in the 1978 World Cup finals was played over the action. Archie's son Scot was also a fantastic player for the Reds and made his own mark at the club in the 90's. return to previous page |
